It’s important to grow in our understanding of the Bible’s teaching on suffering — not just to help ourselves, but so that we can be a support and encouragement to others.
I recently spoke to one of our members who is walking with a friend through an intense period of suffering. At this point, the suffering is fresh and the wound is raw, and it’s time simply to grieve with one who is grieving, assure her of continued love and prayer, and be there to serve. Lord-willing, there will come a time when words may be spoken, and I suggested a few helpful resources to be reading and studying in the meantime.
It occurred to me that many others are also either suffering themselves or seeking to walk alongside those who are, so it may be helpful to share these resources with you. Obviously, there are many more excellent resources available, but these are a helpful place to begin:
- You can download an entire John Piper book called Suffering and the Sovereignty of God for free, and I’d especially recommend the chapter by my friend (and the friend of others at PCF) Dustin Shramek
- Here’s a helpful sermon/article by Piper on suffering, called ‘Preparing to Know Christ Deeply Through Suffering’
- Finally, Randy Alcorn is an excellent author, and he’s written an important book on suffering called If God is Good: Faith in the Midst of Suffering and Evil
