Why I so appreciate George Herbert's 'The Country Parson'

Posted by Stephen Witmer on August 21st, 2019

I was thrilled to discover, a couple years ago, that the great poet George Herbert (who was also a rural pastor) had written a manual on rural ministry before his early death at the age of 39. That rural ministry book, called The Country Parson, was published in 1652, long after Herbert’s death. Although it has encouraged many generations of pastors and laypeople in the centuries since, it’s not as widely known or used today. Here’s a recent Gospel Coalition article in which I make the case for reading and learning from this important book: ‘What a Famous Poet Can Teach Rural Pastors.’
