Happy Reformation Day!
Happy Reformation Day!
October 31st is an important holiday, and I’m not talking about costumes and candy. October 31st is Reformation Day. According to tradition, on October 31, 1517 Martin Luther posted the 95 Theses on the church door in Wittenberg, starting the Protestant Reformation.
The posting of the 95 Theses was one of the most important events in church history. So much of what we consider core to the Christian faith, such as scripture as the rule of faith and justification by grace through faith, were clarified by the Reformation. Reformation Day should be a day that we celebrate truth!
Recently I read a blog post about how Christians respond to Halloween. Noting that Reformation Day and Halloween share the date, the writer says:
What I’m talking about is the level of energy and attention given to it and the contrasting lack of it given to arguable more central issues of Christianity. Christians can be shocked that another Christian will go trick or treating, but not blink an eye of awareness or concern when another Christian distorts the doctrine of the Trinity.
So let’s remember Reformation Day, and honor it by striving to learn and treasure all the truth that God has revealed to us in His Word.
