Reading Old Books

I have said a number of times that I’d love to start an “Old Books Club”, and get a bunch of people reading and discussing some old Christian classic. In Adult Sunday School we talked about why we tend not to read Christian History, and Stephen gave us reasons that we should.

I saw something else online recently that challenged me. As much as I like to talk about reading old books, I haven’t read any really old books – I’ve got a 1400 year gap between Revelation and Luther. I’ve never read Augustine. And as this article says,

Augustine over the course of his lifetime penned more than five million words which would become the backdrop for the next millennium of Western theological and philosophical thought. At the apex of his writings stands The City of God.

This sounds like a challenge! I feel the need to read the book.

Here’s my thought. A blog that I read recently had a series of posts titled Reading Classics Together. The blogger read a chapter of the book every week, and blogged about it. Other read along, and posted comments to the blog. It was a kind of virtual book club. So let’s do it – let’s read “The City of God” together! I’ll blog as we go, and we can discuss it together online, and when we see it other.

So whose with me? If your interested, let me know. Add a comment to this post, send me an email, tell me on Sunday. We can start sometime in October, and enjoy this classic together!
