Reading Old Books – Confessions

A while back I posted the idea for a virtual book club. I had been challenged by something I saw online to read Augustine’s City of God, and thought it would be good to read it together with some brothers and sisters.

Walt Crooker responded with a counter proposal. It turns out that City of God is over 1000 pages (I should have checked that first!), which is probably a bit aggressive for a first attempt that the virtual book club concept. So Walt suggested that we try Confessions (less than 400 pages) instead.

We’re going to go for it, and invite anyone else who would like to join us to come along. There are 13 chapters (Augustine called them books) that are mostly between 20-30 pages in the edition I have. We figure we can read one every two weeks. So we’ll give anyone who wants to join us a week to get the book before we begin.

Here’s how we’ll do it. On December 4th (3 weeks from today), I’ll post a blog entry summarizing the chapter and giving my thoughts. Walt and any of you who want to join can start a discussion in the comments section of the blog. After that, I’ll post another summary every two weeks.

If you’d like to join us, you can leave a comment here on the blog or talk to Walt or myself.
