The gospel in Lamentations
For the last two mornings in Lamentations, I have rejoiced in the gospel. The book of Lamentations is composed of five individual laments and we’ve now read the first two. Both of them talk about God’s just wrath that has been poured out on Jerusalem because of the sin of the people.
Lamentations 1.14 says that God fashioned Jerusalem’s sins into a yoke of judgment and set that yoke upon Jerusalem’s neck, making the people bear the terrible consequences of their sin and causing their strength to fail. So, yesterday as I read this (and then throughout the day) I praised God for the gospel – the royal announcement that I do not need to bear the yoke of God’s judgment for my sin. I am free. Jesus has fully dealt with all of God’s wrath for my sin. I bear no yoke.
Lamentations 2.1 says that in his anger, the Lord set Jerusalem under a cloud of judgment. This morning I praised God that I am under no cloud. God is not angry with me. Jesus has absorbed all God’s wrath at my sin. My skies are cloudless. I am bound for the new heavens and new earth forever. No condemnation now I dread, Jesus and all in him is mine!
Let’s live from the gospel today.
