The Millennia of the Word

In the current Adult Sunday School class on Church History, we have been looking for a while at the period of time know as the Middle Ages: the period of time between the fall of Rome and the Renaissance. Many refer to this period of time as the Dark Ages, and in many ways it was a dark time for both western civilization and for the church. But we have noticed a theme – that throughout this period of time, God would raise up people who loved and valued His Word, and when he did there was life.

I saw a review of a book, Christian Mission: How Christianity Became a World Religion which explained how the spread of the Gospel has resulted in the spread of literacy and education. This should not be a surprise, since the Christian faith depends on the understanding of God’s Word. You can read about this here.

Stephen joked when he said that 2010 was the Year of the Word part 2 at PCF that we wouldn’t have a part 3 in 2011. But looking at the history of the church, we are all really in our third Millennium of the Word!
